About Us
About Us

The aims of the Monmouth Photographic Club are to help members improve both the quality of and their enjoyment of photography. Hopefully club meetings will inspire you, help you to learn, and above all be fun!

We are open to people of all levels of experience and expertise, total beginners are very welcome.

The camera you use is irrelevant. It doesn’t matter if you have the best quality camera that money can buy, a simple point and shoot camera, or your phone camera. You may be an avid photographer taking photographs at every opportunity or you might just want to take occasional photographs of days out, holidays, or your family.

Whatever your level our aim is to help you get the best out of your photography.

We do this through a series of meetings from September to May which can broadly be split into four categories as follows:-

1)Talks and demonstrations.
The club invites well-known photographers to come and talk to the club and exhibit some of their work in the form of digital images and / or prints. Seeing other people’s work gives you inspiration for improving your own photography.

2)Practical sessions.
Members are invited to try various aspects of photography with support from members or tutors.

3)Competitions.
By entering competitions you can see how your photography is improving and how it compares with the work of other members. The judges are always helpful in providing friendly, constructive criticism. However you don't have to enter competitions unless you want to, you can learn a lot simply by observing other members' images being judged.

4)Members Evenings. (Open to all, run by members)
Certain evenings in the programme are designated as members evenings. The exact content of a particular evening is decided by the members and include such things as members giving a demonstration of a particular photographic skill / technique that they use, studio evenings, discussion evenings on a particular aspect of photography, photograph assessment evenings etc.

In addition to the club meetings:

  • We have regular outdoor photographic meet ups, plus occasional short breaks/weekends away.
  • On the fourth Friday of the month we have a meeting via Zoom allowing us to benefit from speakers from far and wide, both nationally and internationally.
  • Many members are happy to offer one-to-one help with getting the best out of your camera and/or photo processing and manipulation. If you would like some help ask any committee member and they will point you to the right person to help you.
  • At various times throughout the year we run tuition workshops on different aspects of photography.
  • We have a members' WhatsApp group to share photos, comments and suggestions for trips out etc.
  • Each month we have a website challenge. The idea of this is to encourage members to try out new ideas or types of photography and to showcase innovative images. (See the website Challenge page for more information). This is followed by a Zoom discussion of the images for those who want to take part.

How to Join :

If you think we might be for you, you are welcome to "try us out" before joining. You can join in all events, (meetings at Mitchell Troy Village Hall, Zoom meetings, Zoom discussion group, and outdoor photography meet ups) during your first month for free, (except for any special ticketed events which would be charged for). At the end of the month if you want to continue you would then have to join.  If you decide to join us the annual membership fee is £80, (paid by two installments, £40 in September, £40 in January)*. This fee covers ALL meetings including the Hall meetings and refreshments, and the monthly Zoom meetings and discussion groups, (there is no further meeting charge).

Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. The fee for under 16s is 50% of the full fee and the accompanying adult is free.
